In a blog entry on Thursday, Facebook stated that about 600,000 log-ins every day are compromised. The factoid, first noted by security site Sophos , was in the context of an entry introducing new security features for the social network. The figure was extrapolated by a stat showing 0.06% of 1 billion logins per day are compromised. Less than 0.5% ofFacebook users experience spam on any given day. [More from Mashable: Should the New Facebook Gestures Allow a Dislike Button? ] Facebook's proposed solution for such breaches is to find three to five trusted friends. That way, if you're locked out of your account, Facebook will send codes to your friends to give to you. Facebook is also testing app passwords that the company will generate on your behalf and you won't need to remember. What do you think? Are you surprised at the extent of the breaches or does this seem low to you? Let us know in the comments. [More from Mashable: How to Time Your Facebook Posts to ...

What's the McRib made of, anyway? (BLOG)

Image
(theweek)The popular McDonald's sandwich is back. Find out what's inside — if you dare McDonalds' McRib and its cult-like following are back. Thank goodness the "disconcerting" sandwich is only returning for a limited time only, says Meredith Melnick at TIME . Because if you knew about all the unpronounceable ingredients packed into the McRib, you might think twice about wolfing down the sauce-drenched pork concoction. Think you can stomach what's inside? Read on: How many ingredients are there? At face value, the sandwich contains just pork, onions, and pickle slices slathered in barbecue sauce and laid out on a bun. But the truth is, there are roughly 70 ingredients. The bun alone contains 34, says TIME's Melnick . In addition to chemicals like ammonium sulfate and polysorbate 80, the most egregious may be azodicarbonamide — "a flour-bleaching agent most commonly used in the manufactur[ing] of foamed plastics like gym mats the and soles of shoe...

Chavez began to argue with Smith while playing the board game with her 10-year-old grandson. The boy told police that Chavez accused Smith of cheating at Monopoly, and then sent the boy to bed around 11 p.m. mid-argument. According to a probable cause statement released by police, the couple’s dispute escalated until Chavez hit Smith over the head with a glass bottle, then grabbed a knife and began to cut him on his head, neck, face, arms and hand. Chavez’s grandson slept through the physical altercation, waking up when police arrived in his bedroom, according to the statement. Police said Smith was in stable condition at St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance after the attack. Doctors told police Smith was “very intoxicated” when he arrived. Police said Chavez’s apartment was covered in blood from...

Taco Bell Terrorized As Man demands More Beef (BLOG)

Image
(AP)A disgruntled customer apparently threw a Molotov cocktail outside the drive-through window of an Albany, Ga., Taco Bell after complaining that his two XXL Taco Bell chalupas weren’t living up to their promise of having extra meat. The man, whom police and Taco Bell employees were unable to identify because of poor-quality surveillance footage, called the Taco Bell around 4 a.m. demanding more meat for his chalupas, the police report stated. When manager Cynthia Thompson told the customer she would be unable to accommodate his request because the restaurant was closing, she said he replied: “That’s alright, I’ll just come and redecorate the place.” Shortly after, a gasoline odor was traced to just outside the drive-through window, where Thompson found a fire and a melting plastic bottle filled with liquid, which the Albany Fire Department identified as a Molotov cocktail. Police have filed a request to subpoena the Taco Bell location’s phone records in an effort to identify...

Oakland mayor sorry for clash that injured ex-Marine (BLOG)

Image
OAKLAND, Calif (Reuters) - Oakland Mayor Jean Quan has apologized for a clash between police and protesters during a march against economic inequality that left an ex-Marine wounded, and said she would meet with demonstrators. Quan, who has come under withering criticism for her handling of the protests, said in a written statement that she had met with ex-Marine Scott Olsen and his parents and was concerned about his recovery. Olsen, 24, was struck in the head during protests in Oakland on Tuesday night and has become a rallying cry for the so-called "Occupy Wall Street" protests nationwide. A spokesman for Highland General Hospital in Oakland said Olsen remained in fair condition on Friday, having been upgraded from critical one day earlier, and was visiting with his parents. "I am deeply saddened about the outcome on Tuesday," Quan said in the statement. "It was not what anyone hoped for, ultimately it was my responsibility, and I apologize for what ...

Kumar's win echoes the plot of the 2008 Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire," whose impoverished protagonist won the grand prize on the show. Kumar and his wife of five months wept when Indian movie legend Amitabh Bachchan , the show's host, handed them a check for 50 million rupees (just over $1 million) after the contestant gave all the right answers on the show. "You have created history. Your grit and determination has made you come so far in this show," Bachchan said. Before Kumar went on the program, which was taped Tuesday...

New numbers: Income for top 1 percent skyrocketed over last 30 years (BLOG)

Image
So you already know that the gap between rich and poor has been widening lately . But some new numbers from the Congressional Budget Office put the issue into stark relief. As the chart at right shows, between 1979 and 2007, the share of after-tax income going to each of the bottom four income quintiles--the bottom 80 percent--has dropped. The only quintile that has increased its share is the top 20 percent. And the top 1 percent has more than doubled its share. That top 1 percent saw its income skyrocket by 275 percent. Those between the 80th and 99th percentile--that is, the top 20 percent, excluding the very top 1 percent--also did pretty well, seeing their income rise by 65 percent. Income for the bottom 20 percent, meanwhile, grew by just 18 percent. One reason for the growing gap, the report said, is the impact of government transfer programs. Back in 1979, the poorest 20 percent of the population received 50 percent of all government transfers. By 2007, that had dropped t...
