Christian Bale says he's finished playing Batman (BLOG)

Image
" Batman Begins " star Christian Bale is hanging up his cape for good -- his upcoming superhero movie will be his last. The actor took on the role for the first time in 2005's "Batman Begins," before returning to the part for the acclaimed "The Dark Knight" in 2008, which pulled in more than $1 billion at the global box office. Bale has donned the Caped Crusader's cowl for a third time in director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated "The Dark Knight Rises," which will see him fight both Bane and Catwoman, played by Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway, respectively. But Bale star insists the next installment will be the last time fans see him play Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego. He tells the Philippine Daily Inquirer, "I wrapped (filming) a few days ago so that will be the last time I'm taking that cowl off. "I believe the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done. Everything's finished. It's me ...

Afghan officials: Fire from Pakistan led to attack (BLOG)

Image
ISLAMABAD — Afghan troops and coalition forces came under fire from the direction of two Pakistan army border posts, prompting them to call in NATO airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, Afghan officials said Sunday. The account challenges Islamabad's claims that the attacks, which have plunged U.S.-Pakistan ties to new lows, were unprovoked. It also pointed to a possible explanation for the incident Saturday on the Pakistan side of the border. NATO officials have complained that insurgents fire from across the poorly defined frontier, often from positions close to Pakistani soldiers, who have been accused of tolerating or supporting them. Pakistan's political leaders and military establishment, still facing domestic criticism following the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May, have reacted with unprecedented anger to the soldiers' deaths. They closed the country's Western border to trucks delivering supplies to coalition troops in Afghanistan, deman...

Syracuse fires assistant coach Fine (BLOG)

Image
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Syracuse University fired associate head basketball coach Bernie Fine on Sunday in the wake of an investigation of child molestation allegations against him. ''At the direction of Chancellor Nancy Cantor, Bernie Fine's employment with Syracuse University has been terminated, effective immediately,'' Kevin Quinn, the school's senior vice president for public affairs, said in a statement. The 65-year-old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. He had the longest active streak of consecutive seasons at one school among assistant coaches in Division I. Fine's firing comes in the wake of new revelations Sunday, including a third accuser. Syracuse had placed Fine on paid administrative leave when accusations first surfaced. Two former Syracuse ball boys were the first to accuse Fine, who has called the allegations ''patently false.'' Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine , said Sunday that he told police tha...

"Healthy" Holiday Food to Avoid (And Healthier Foods to Eat Instead) (BLOG)

Image
The holidays are here and with them come a multitude of parties. All of them, no doubt, will have a buffet table packed with delicious holiday treats. Your tactic for avoiding temptation may be to steer clear of all the special treats and divert yourself with only healthy foods. Great in theory, but not so perfect in practice. Lots of foods that are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals are also full of calories. And when you're mindlessly munching as you're mingling, those calories can add up fast. Don't assume that just because something is healthy it is also low-cal. If you like the healthy treats that sometimes show up at holiday parties, that's great! Have them—in moderation. If you'd rather sample some of the special seasonal treats, just put two or three of the most delicious-looking hors d'oeuvres on your plate and enjoy. Before you head out to party, check out these surprisingly unhealthy holiday calorie bombs and better bets to choose ins...

Solar eclipse darkens Black Friday (BLOG, PICS)

Image
Alan Boyle writes Today was "Black Friday" for some folks in southern climes, and not because it's the big shopping day after Thanksgiving : A partial solar eclipse made the sky just a little bit darker in areas of New Zealand, Tasmania, South Africa and Antarctica. Some observers spotted only a slight grazing of the sun, while others — such as Williams College astronomer Jay Pasachoff and his eclipse-chasing colleagues — could see the moon take an appreciable bite out of the sun's disk in the skies over Invercargill in southern New Zealand. "After an in-and-out, off-and-on-rain day, we are very pleased," Pasachoff said in a report from Sky & Telescope's Kelly Beatty . Pasachoff passed along another perspective on the eclipse, taken from the seventh-floor offices of the New Zealand Department of Conservation in Invercargill. The hand in the picture belongs to Steve Butler, who works for the government agency. "I gave him one of my sola...

5 Easy Ways to Stay Happier (BLOG)

Image
1- Good Sleep Research shows that people who go without enough good sleep (generally considered at least six hours a night) are up to six times as likely to become depressed as those who get good sleep. 2- Good Sex Levels of the "happy neurochemicals" serotonin and endorphin have been found to rise in postorgasmic rats. At the same time, there's a surge in oxytocin — which is believed to reduce stress levels — as well as an uptick in prolactin, thought to be associated with the sleepy feeling after sex. These findings suggest that having sex (or taking matters into your own hands) brings some temporary relief for stress or anxiety. 3- Good Exercise Particularly aerobic exercise. The best evidence to date — based on the analysis of fourteen random controlled trials — indicates that to prevent, and even effectively treat, depression with exercise requires three thirty-minute sessions per week of aerobic exercise at 60 to 80 percent of maximum heart rate (i.e., typica...

Weightlifting legend Alekseyev dead at 69 (BLOG)

Image
Legendary Russian weightlifter Vasily Alekseyev -- who became a Soviet-era Cold War icon, as well as a household name in the US thanks to his frequent appearances on "Wide World of Sports" in the 1970s -- has died at the age of 69. Alekseyev, who won two Olympic and eight world super heavyweight titles in addition to setting 80 world records throughout his distinguished career, passed away in a German clinic Friday, Ria Novosti reported. He had long suffered heart problems and was sent to the clinic after his health deteriorated. The burly, big-bellied Alekseyev was born in Shakhty, southern Russia, in 1942. He set his first world record in January 1970 and captured the world title later that year, a crown he held for seven years. He was the first man to total more than 600 kilograms (1,323 pounds) in the triple event, winning Olympic gold medals at the 1972 Games in Munich and the 1976 Games in Montreal. His accomplishments were always prominent propaganda tools fo...

Egypt protesters get US support for power transfer (BLOG, VIDEO)

Image
CAIRO — Tens of thousands of Egyptians demanding an end to military rule converged on Cairo's Tahrir square Friday, while the White House hardened its rhetoric, urging Egypt's military to give way "as soon as possible" to full civilian rule. "Full transfer of power to a civilian government must take place in a just and inclusive manner that responds to the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people, as soon as possible," said White House press secretary Jay Carney. The military men who took over after people power toppled President HosniMubarak on February 11 are themselves under fire from protesters who accuse them of clinging to power, leading to street battles that look like a replay of February's unrest. The ruling army council named Kamal el-Ganzouri, 78, who served as prime minister under Mubarak from 1996 to 1999, to head a national salvation government. Prime Minister Essam Sharaf's cabinet resigned earlier this week amid the prote...

N.B.A. Reaches Tentative Deal To Save Season (BLOG)

Image
With handshakes, sighs and weary smiles, the N.B.A. and its players resolved a crippling labor dispute early Saturday, allowing them to reopen their $4-billion-a-year business. A 66-game season would start on Christmas Day, ending the second-longest lockout in league history. On nearly every count, the deal favors the owners, who all along had sought an overhaul. The players made significant concessions, including a reduction of up to $300 million year in salaries, $3 billion over the life of the agreement. Based on tentative agreements reached earlier, the deal is expected to be for 10 years, the longest such contract in the history of the National Basketball Association, with an option for either side to terminate it after six years. It includes a significant pay cut for players, along with shorter contracts, smaller raises and a more punitive tax system to rein in the top-spending teams. The deal was reached about 3 a.m. Saturday, on the 149th day of the lockout, after a fina...

Suh stomp to be reviewed next week (BLOG)

Image
DETROIT (AP) Ndamukong Suh 's stomp in Thursday's game that led to the Detroit defensive lineman's ejection will be reviewed by the league next week. An NFL spokesman says plays from Week 12 that would be reviewed for potential discipline will be done under normal circumstances, after all games are completed. That means it could be a few days before Suh and the Lions find out exactly what the All-Pro will face after he stepped down with his right foot and appeared to make contact with the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith . Suh was ejected in the third quarter of Detroit's 27-15 loss to the Packers . Suh met with Commissioner Roger Goodell at the beginning of this month to discuss several penalties Suh received for a variety of hits.

Body found, could be new Craigslist job ad victim (BLOG)

Image
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The FBI is investigating whether a body found Friday in a shallow grave in Akron, Ohio, is a second killing connected to a phony Craigslist job ad that authorities say lured victims into a deadly robbery scheme. The body was found Friday near the Rolling Acres shopping mall in Akron, agency spokeswoman Vicki Anderson told The Associated Press. The cause of death and identity are under investigation. The FBI is working on the supposition that the body may be that of Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon, who hasn't been seen in more than a week. He answered the same ad for a farm hand that authorities say led to the shooting death of Norfolk, Va., resident David Pauley, 51, in a rural area 90 miles south of Akron. A South Carolina man answered the ad but managed to escape after being shot Nov. 6. Two people from the Akron area are in custody: a high school student who has been charged with attempted murder and 52-year-old Richard Beasley, who is in jail on unrelat...

Burn Off a Holiday Meal in 3 Days (BLOG)

Image
Cocktail parties, cookie swaps, and family meals help the average American pack on a pound of body weight between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, and those who are overweight could gain 5 pounds or more during the holidays, according to research from Tufts University. Dietitians estimate that a holiday meal alone—like the plate you pile high with turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, and pie—can pack 2,200 to 2,400 more calories than an everyday dinner. To burn off these calories, a 165-pound person would have to swim laps for 4.5 hours or walk almost 30 miles on the treadmill. But you have better things to do this season, like shop, string lights, and entertain guests—and that’s okay. This plan of attack will show you how to use these activities, along with classic calorie-cutting tips, to burn off an oversized meal (and then some!) in three short days. Calorie ranges have been calculated for a person who weighs 165 to 195 pounds, the average body weights for American women and men a...

6 inmates nabbed after Hollywood-style escape from Mexico penal colony (BLOG)

Image
M EXICO CITY — Six inmates from the last island penal colony in the Americas were recaptured at sea Thursday after they used buoyant containers and wood planks to try to swim to freedom in an escape reminiscent of the 1973 movie "Papillon." The Mexican Navy said the inmates used empty plastic gas or water tanks to help stay afloat as they swam about 60 miles south of the Islas Marias, a Mexican penal colony where inmates live in small houses and are normally not locked up. Prisoners can tend small gardens and raise food. The six men were only about 58 miles from the Pacific coast resort of Puerto Vallarta when they were spotted by a passing boat early Thursday. Sunburned The boat called in a tip to a local naval base, and patrol boats were quickly dispatched to take the men into custody. Photos provided by the Navy showed them men sunburned but alert — and unhappy — on the deck of the patrol vessel. The men, who ranged in age from 28 to 39 years, were taken back to...

Puppet Master: 'Breaking Dawn's' Big $12.4M Wednesday Beats Solid $6.6M 'Muppets' Debut (BLOG)

Image
Disney's anticipated film reboot of " The Muppets " enjoyed a solid $6.6 million debut Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. But it was the continued strong play of Summit's " Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 " that continued to rule the box office, grossing $12.4 million, according to rival-studio estimates. The fourth "Twilight" movie is on pace to gross close to $60 million over the five-day holiday period, which would give it a domestic total of well over $200 million by the end of the weekend. Debuting at 3,440 theaters, Disney's "The Muppets" could come close to $50 million over the same five-day period, which beat pre-release estimates. While "The Muppets" will manage to carve a niche at a box office flooded with PG films, Paramount/GK Films' " Hugo " and Sony/Aardman's " Arthur Christmas " had a quieter time getting established Wednesday. "Arthur Christmas" debuted...

It's College Football Rivalry Week! (BLOG)

Image
Alabama vs. Auburn. Michigan vs. Ohio State. UCLA vs. USC. Many bitter rivals hit the gridiron this weekend. This year, a lot more than pride is at stake . Rivalry Week can be a funny thing. On the one hand, it’s one of the things that makes college football what it is, that makes it different from all other sports. But on the other, it also highlights the sport’s inherent regionalism: Auburn-Alabama might well be college football’s biggest rivalry, but more seasons than not, it doesn’t matter all that much to anyone outside the state. This season is different. This season, there’s a whole lot more than just pride at stake when these traditional rivals clash. Texas at Texas A&M If this game was any indication, we are in for a monster weekend. Playing for pride and a secondary bowl berth, these two played for perhaps the last time on Thursday to kick off Rivalry Week. The Aggies’ impending move to the SEC has put the future of this longstanding rivalry in doubt, meaning the win...

The End of Caller ID (BLOG)

Image
(Atlantic Wire)If a number's not in our address book, attached to a very familiar name, there's no reason to pick it up -- it's probably something evil. Before, if a number even had a familiar area code, it was probably okay to pick it up. It was the hairdresser confirming an appointment, or the school calling about your good-for-nothing kids. But now that telemarketers and debt collectors have figured out ways to game call-screeners by spoofing phone numbers, as The New York Times's Matt Richtel points out , we have completely lost trust in any unknown numbers. "You don’t know who is on the other end of the line, no matter what your caller ID might say," Sandy Chalmers, a division manager at the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection in Wisconsin, told Richtel. But in an age when many people carry cell phones stocked with hundreds or thousands of phone numbers accumulated over the years, Caller ID is already behind the times. We're trai...
