Facebook spam virus bombarding users with graphic images of violence, hardcore porn (BLOG)

Image
Facebook users, beware: There is a nasty virus quickly spreading across the social network that floods accounts with gruesome images of beastiality, hardcore pornography, self-mutilation and a variety of other very-NSFW pictures, reports Emil Protalinski at ZDnet . Facebook has confirmed the presence of the virus, and says it is currently investigating the matter. “Facebook is aware of these reports and we are investigating the issue,” said a Facebook spokesperson in a statement. According to The Christian Post , which first reported the virus, the nasty cyber attack maybe be the work of Anonymous, whose members have previously vowed to launch an attack on the social network as retribution for “selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world.” The involvement of Anonymous is so far unconfirmed. While we have not yet been exposed to the spam virus ourselves, others say t...

Facebook Says 600,000 Accounts Compromised Per Day (BLOG)

Image
In a blog entry on Thursday, Facebook stated that about 600,000 log-ins every day are compromised. The factoid, first noted by security site Sophos , was in the context of an entry introducing new security features for the social network. The figure was extrapolated by a stat showing 0.06% of 1 billion logins per day are compromised. Less than 0.5% ofFacebook users experience spam on any given day. [More from Mashable: Should the New Facebook Gestures Allow a Dislike Button? ] Facebook's proposed solution for such breaches is to find three to five trusted friends. That way, if you're locked out of your account, Facebook will send codes to your friends to give to you. Facebook is also testing app passwords that the company will generate on your behalf and you won't need to remember. What do you think? Are you surprised at the extent of the breaches or does this seem low to you? Let us know in the comments. [More from Mashable: How to Time Your Facebook Posts to ...

Facebook Gets a Makeover for 2011 (BLOG)

Image
As Facebook explained in a blog post, the new design aims to make it easier to quickly glean key information about a person from their profile and tries to “[make] your entire profile a more compelling visual experience” by featuring photos and images more heavily than before. Personal information, such as your job, school, location, and hometown, and birthdate, along with recently tagged photos will now appear at the top of your profile. “The profile begins with a quick overview of basic information such as where you’re from, where you went to school, and where you work–the kinds of conversation starters you share with people you’ve just met or exchange with old friends as you get reacquainted,” Facebook explained in a blog. Additional changes include revamped photos and Friends pages, as well as the ability to feature certain groups friends (or “highlight meaningful relationships”) on your profile. (Learn more about all the changes here) Rearrangeable icons, rather than text, wil...

Is Facebook thinking about buying Twitter? (BLOG)

Image
Facebook and Google are giving "serious look-sees" to Twitter as a potential acquisition, Liz Gannes at All Things D report s. No term sheet has been extended, but both companies are apparently thinking about making a move. As we previously reported Google offered $2.5 billion - $4 billion for Twitter this year. It would be out of character for Facebook to drop $4 billion on Twitter. It mostly buys smaller companies at lower price tags. It also offered $500 million in stock and cash for Twitter two years ago, which Twitter rejected. Just last week Twitter cofounder Biz Stone said the company wouldn't sell, not even for $5 billion . That suggests the company would rather raise a fresh round. Gannes reports DST is offering Twitter a $100 million investment at a $4 billion valuation. (We have heard from sources that DST is interested in Twitter , as well.) It is willing to make a huge investment to beat out Kleiner Perkins and Andreessen Horowitz, which both want to ...

DIASPORA: THE FACEBOOK KILLER?? (BLOG)

Image
(CNN) -- In the spring of this year, the "Facebook alternative" Diaspora achieved extensive media coverage -- including an article in the New York Times -- and raised tens of thousands of dollars in funding from online donors. The pitch was an appealing one: In the midst of a privacy backlash at Facebook, Diaspora proposed a more private alternative to the leading social network. But Diaspora is no Facebook rival, and history tells us it won't make a dent in Facebook's success. A focus on privacy Diaspora, which began sending out invites this week, attempts to outclass Facebook in privacy features and user freedom. Features include granular control over who sees your information, the ability to download your photos and the option to delete your account without any hassle. With $200,000 now raised for the project, you'd think Diaspora was off to a great start. In reality, its impact on Facebook will be minimal. The pitch was an appealing one: In the midst of ...

Facebook testing a 'stalker button' (BLOG REVISITED)

Image
Full Story: MASHABLE / CNN  Facebook is apparently testing a new subscription feature that would allow users to receive alerts any time a specific friend takes certain actions on the social network. AllFacebook reports that it has noticed the new feature popping up on friends' profiles. Facebook told the blog, "This feature is being tested with a small percent of users. It lets people subscribe to friends and pages to receive notifications whenever the person they've subscribed to updates their status or posts new content (photos, videos, links or notes)." In other words, when you click to subscribe to a user, you'll get a new Facebook notification in your notifications bar at the top of the site or on the mobile device of your choosing any time that other user posts content. We're not sure yet if you can subscribe to someone who's not a friend, which is much more stalker-like, or if notifications include likes and comments (right now, it sounds lik...

FACEBOOK: NEW MESSAGING SYSTEM

Image
Today, Facebook introduced a new messaging system that will include e-mail, instant messages, Facebook messages and SMS. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched what he calls a "modern messaging system" to handle different kinds of messages and bring them together under one social umbrella.  The system is designed to save all messages for five years, meaning users will have a history of their communications. Although people will now be able to have a facebook.com e-mail address, Andrew Bosworth, a software engineer at Facebook, noted that the new system will work with other e-mail systems, such as Gmail and Yahoo mail. "There was a lot of press leading up to this saying this is an e-mail killer,"  Zuckerberg added. "This is not an e-mail killer. It's a messaging system that has e-mail as one part of it. I don't expect people to wake up tomorrow and say, 'I'm going to shut down my Yahoo account or my Gmail account.' We expect that more people ...
