Prosecutors seek jail time for Bonds (BLOG)

Image
SAN FRANCISO (AP) Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to send former baseball slugger Barry Bonds to prison. In court documents filed late Thursday, prosecutors objected to a recommendation by a federal probation officer that Bonds get only probation when he's sentenced for obstruction of justice on Dec. 16. In the documents, prosecutors asked that Bonds be sentenced to 15 months in prison. Bonds, 47, was convicted in April of obstructing a grand jury's sports doping investigation with an evasive answer. Prosecutors dropped three other counts charging Bonds with making false statements after the jury deadlocked on those charges. They accused Bonds of lying to the grand jury when he denied knowingly taking performance-enhancing drugs and said he allowed only doctors to inject him. Federal sentencing guidelines for conviction on the obstruction charge recommend a prison sentence between 15 and 21 months. But Bonds' lawyers have cited an investigative report pre...

Cubs offer managing job to Sveum (BLOG)

Image
MILWAUKEE Advantage, Theo. The Cubs offered Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum their managing position Wednesday, seemingly eclipsing the Red Sox for the candidate that both teams coveted, a major league source said. The Red Sox declined to make Sveum an offer, leaving him with an easy decision, one that likely will lead to him becoming the Cubs’ next manager. The Cubs did not announce the hiring of Sveum on Wednesday night, but the move seems inevitable barring a last-minute offer from the Red Sox. New Cubs president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer were with the Red Sox when Sveum was the team’s third base coach in 2004 and ’05. The Red Sox, after losing Sveum and eliminating Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin from consideration, may widen their managerial search, team officials said. Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo, Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. and Tigers bench coach Gene Lamont remain under consideration for the Red Sox job, one source said...

McCourt agrees to sell Dodgers (BLOG)

Image
LOS ANGELES (AP) Embattled Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and Major League Baseball reached an agreement late Tuesday to sell one of the sport's most storied franchises, ending a seven-year run that included four trips to the postseason before recently becoming mired in legal troubles capped by a filing for bankruptcy protection. A joint statement said there will be a ''court-supervised process'' to sell the team and its media rights to maximize value for the Dodgers and McCourt. The Blackstone Group LP will manage the sale, which could include Dodger Stadium and the surrounding parking lots. The announcement came as the Dodgers and MLB were headed toward a showdown in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware at the end of the month as mediation between both sides was ongoing. McCourt and baseball Commissioner Bud Selig have traded barbs since MLB took control of day-to-day operation of the team in April over concerns about the team's finances and the...

Sabathia agrees to deal with Yankees (BLOG)

Image
NEW YORK (AP) For CC Sabathia , there's no better place to pitch than Yankee Stadium. The big left-hander decided to stay with New York rather than test the free-agent market, agreeing Monday to a new deal that adds $30 million and one season to his existing contract, giving him a package that pays $122 million over the next five years. ''My son loves it here. All my kids love it here. My wife loves it here, obviously, and I do, too. I love pitching for the Yankee fans and everything, so it was the easy choice,'' Sabathia said during a conference call. The 31-year-old had until midnight to opt out of his current agreement, which had $92 million remaining over the next four years in $23 million annual salaries. New York added a $25 million salary for 2016 and gets a $25 million option for 2017 with a $5 million buyout. ''It was just more time. That's all it was. It was never a question about money or anything like that,'' Sabathia said...

Cliff Lee Signs with the Phillies (BLOG)

Image
It looks like the Phillies are going to have quite the rotation when spring rolls around. According to MLB.com's  T.R Sullivan , left-handed pitcher  Cliff Lee  is  set to sign  with the Philadelphia Phillies. According to YES reporter  Jack Curry , the Yankees  have been told  by Lee's representatives that he plans to sign elsewhere, and that appears to be Philadelphia. Curry also reports that the Yankees offered Lee a seven-year deal worth $150 million. It appears that Lee's deal with the Phillies will be for significantly less. The Yankees and Rangers seemed to be the runaway favorites to land Lee, but the Phillies' late offer may have been what Lee was looking for the whole time. The 2008 AL Cy Young winner pitched just under 80 innings for the Phillies in the 2009 regular season after being traded from the Indians. He then led the Phillies to the 2009 World Series where the Phils fell to the Yankees. If the reports are true, Lee joins a stac...

MLB: SHOULD DEREK JETER STAY A YANKEE?

Image
Derek Jeter's contract negotiations have gone public. If you somehow haven't heard, the Yankees initial offer for their shortstop was a three-year, $45 million that Jeter's longtime agent Casey Close laughed at. Close's argument was easy to anticipate. Jeter's an icon, he's an essential Yankee or, perhaps better stated, he is the Yankees. The bottom line is that Jeter is worth more to the Yankees than he is to any other team. Especially coming off this season, the comparables show he's worth around $10 million a year. Save for the Mets making a desperate marketing move, it's hard to see any team matching the Yankees first offer. And if Jeter does manage to get a total package higher than what the Yankees offer — know that that first offer isn’t their final offer — the team knows that he wouldn’t be dumb enough to go. Why? Because, depending on the market, Jeter losing the lifelong Yankee label could cost him so much in marketing dollars that he’d actual...
