Shedeur Sanders to Start Week 9 Against the Saints

Image
The Cleveland Browns announced Friday that quarterback Shedeur Sanders will make his first start of the 2026 season in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, as Deshaun Watson remains in the NFL's concussion protocol. Sanders, a 2025 fifth-round pick (QB #2), took first-team reps all week. Head coach Todd Monken announced the decision Friday: "I'm fired up to see him play. I mean, who wouldn't be?" Watson is officially listed as questionable. The Browns (5-3) play at New Orleans (2-5) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at the Caesars Superdome. Brees Breaks Marinos Record (BLOG)

Image
NEW ORLEANS Once he watches the game replay, Drew Brees will be hard on himself. The New Orleans Saints quarterback will bemoan throwing two uncharacteristic passes into double coverage that were intercepted. He will feel just as badly about trying to call consecutive timeouts late in the second quarter, which is a Football 101 rules violation. There were 16 incompletions and three second-half drives that ended without a first down or points to prolong what had the early makings of a blowout. But immediately after this magical Monday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome came to an end, Brees had every right to proclaim a 45-16 victory over Atlanta as “perfect,” even though he wasn’t. New Orleans (12-3) defeated its archrival to clinch the NFC South title and notch a seventh consecutive win. The Saints were outstanding on the ground with 164 yards against the NFL’s fourth-ranked run defense. They also stymied a Falcons offense that simply couldn’t keep pace. And in the proc...

Chiefs fire Haley after 5-8 start (BLOG)

Image
Updated Dec 12, 2011 11:58 AM ET The Kansas City Chiefs fired head coach Toddy Haley Monday. The announcement came on the heels of the Chiefs' 37-10 loss to the New York Jets Sunday, dropping the team's record to 5-8 on the season. "This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs," Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. "Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. "We appreciate Todd's contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future." Haley, who was in just his third season with the team, led the Chiefs to an AFC West division title in 2010. He amassed a 19-27 record during his brief tenure in Kansas City. foxsports

Suh stomp to be reviewed next week (BLOG)

Image
DETROIT (AP) Ndamukong Suh 's stomp in Thursday's game that led to the Detroit defensive lineman's ejection will be reviewed by the league next week. An NFL spokesman says plays from Week 12 that would be reviewed for potential discipline will be done under normal circumstances, after all games are completed. That means it could be a few days before Suh and the Lions find out exactly what the All-Pro will face after he stepped down with his right foot and appeared to make contact with the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith . Suh was ejected in the third quarter of Detroit's 27-15 loss to the Packers . Suh met with Commissioner Roger Goodell at the beginning of this month to discuss several penalties Suh received for a variety of hits.

Chiefs claim Kyle Orton, hang on for dear life in AFC West (BLOG)

Image
It won't fix everything that ails them, but the Kansas City Chiefs team that appeared to be very much on life support when they were hammered 34-3 by the New England Patriots on Monday night got a little breath of life on Wednesday by making a waiver claim for recently released former Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton (notes) . According to reports, the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys also put in waiver claims, but the Chiefs had the upper hand as the team with the lowest current number of wins. At 4-6, the Chiefs are tied with the San Diego Chargers for the worst record in the AFC West, but they're far from out of it if they can turn things around — they're just two games behind the Oakland Raiders and one behind the Broncos. [ Related: If Elway still isn't sold on Tebow, why did Broncos let Orton go? ] It was thought by most that Orton would return to Chicago, where he spent the first four years of his career and helped the Bears attain a 21-12 reco...

Arrest warrant issued for WR Terrell Owens (BLOG)

Image
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—An arrest warrant was issued for Terrell Owens (notes) after he failed to show up for a court date regarding child support payments. Diana Bianchini, a spokeswoman for Owens, said Saturday the free-agent wide receiver tried to reschedule an Oct. 24 hearing in Contra Costa County Court because he had set up a televised workout in the hopes of hooking on with an NFL club. No teams attended the workout. According to Bianchini, Owens was looking for a new attorney and was representing himself while trying to change the court date. She said his new attorneys will deal with the warrant issued this week. Bianchini said Owens is seeking to modify his child support payments because they were based on the approximately $12 million a year he was making in 2007 when he played for the Dallas Cowboys . The 37-year-old Owens has been rehabilitating a left knee injury that required surgery. He played 14 games for the Cincinnati Bengals last season, making 72 receptions and...

NFL: Vick May be Out Sunday to rest Bruised QUAD (BLOG)

Image
PHILADELPHIA  (AP) -  Michael Vick  may get a game day off after all - only because of  injury instead of earning a bye. A day after the  NFC East  champion  Philadelphia Eagles  squandered their chance at a postseason bye, it became clear that  Vick  may have taken his last snap until the playoffs. His  severe leg bruise  might be enough to keep  him  out of Sunday's regular-season finale against the  Dallas Cowboys .  Vick  limped around the field and the locker room after he sustained a quad contusion on the first play of the Eagles' 24-14 loss to the  Minnesota Vikings  on Tuesday night. Eagles   coach   Andy Reid  hasn't decided if Vick's  injury  will keep  the quarterback  out the game. All signs point toward yes. The  Eagles  don't need their daring and dashing QB to play Sunday. They are locked into the NFC's No. 3 seed and will host the N...

NFL: Brett Favre Fined 50k For the Sterger Incident

Image
NEW YORK -- Brett Favre has been fined $50,000 but not suspended for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after the league's investigation into allegations he sent inappropriate messages and lewd photos to a former New York Jets game hostess. The $50,000 punishment was for failing to cooperate in the investigation, it was announced Wednesday. Brett Favre Voicemails:  Favre allegedly sent the messages and photos to Jenn Sterger two years ago when they were both with the Jets. The allegations against the 41-year-old Minnesota Vikings quarterback surfaced in October on the website Deadspin. It posted a video Oct. 7 that included text messages and voicemails allegedly left by the quarterback for Sterger, including one in which he invites her to his hotel. The video ends with several below-the belt photos - said to be of Favre - which were allegedly sent to Sterger. A former model who also appeared on the Versus television network, Sterger refused to speak ...

Sports: Pennsylvania Governor RIPS the NFL over Postponed Eagles Game (blog)

Image
Some  Philadelphia Eagles  fans, including the most important one in the state of Pennsylvania, are incensed that the team's game against the  Minnesota Vikings  was canceled for a blizzard that didn't pack as much of a wallop as expected on Sunday night. Governor Ed Rendell joined countless fans upset about the game's move to Tuesday when  he told Fox News :  "It's an absolute joke. I was looking forward to this. It would have been a real experience. This is what football is all about. We're becoming a nation of wussies." Forecasters had called for a blizzard to hit during the game and for up to 18 inches of snow to fall in the City of Brotherly Love. But the center of the storm tracked east of the city and by the time the game would have been over, there was only about seven or eight inches on the ground. In those conditions, the game could have been played.

NFL: Mike Singletary Fired from San Fransisco (blog)

Image
In a move that could not have come as a surprise to anyone, the  San Francisco 49ers  have informed head coach Mike Singletary that he is fired, according to multiple Bay Area sources. Both Adam Schefter of ESPN and Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network confirmed today with team owner Jed York that the team would be hiring a new general manager after the end of the season, and that the new GM was likely going to be in charge of hiring a new head coach. However, it was expected by most that Singletary would finish out the season. After the 49ers' 25-17 loss to the  St. Louis Rams  - a loss that featured Singletary going at it in a prolonged verbal altercation with quarterback  Troy Smith (notes)  on the sidelines -  Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reported that York, his father John, and other team executives met  to decide whether Singletary should be fired immediately, or after the season. Later Sunday evening, Maiocco reported via Twitter that a deci...

NFL: Aaron Rodgers cleared to Practice (Blog)

Image
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he has passed all concussion-related tests and has been cleared to return by both team physician Dr. John Gray and an independent neurologist, ESPNMilwaukee.com reported Tuesday. ESPNMilwaukee.com reported Rodgers sent a text message Tuesday saying he was ready to return after sitting out the Packers' loss to the Patriots on Sunday night. Rodgers suffered his second concussion of the season on a scramble at the end of the second quarter of the Packers' Dec. 12 loss in Detroit. Matt Flynn played well in Rodgers' stead and nearly led the Packers to a win over New England on Sunday. However, the Packers have lost two straight since Rodgers' concussion and face a must-win against the New York Giants on Sunday in order to remain in the playoff race.

Eagles Beat Giants with Crazy TD return By Desean Jackson (VIDEO)

Image
DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick are becoming such a potent duo for the Eagles, everyone in the NFC better stand up and take notice. Vick, after having a bad first half, rallied in the second half and began scoring at-will in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Jackson recovered his own fumble en route to the game-winning touchdown. Let's not forget LeSean McCoy, who still had 64 yards on the ground for the day, and that's a credit to the Giants defense. While the Giants defense stopped McCoy, they didn't stop Vick in the second half, and Vick ran for 130 yards in the game and one touchdown in addition to throwing for 242 yards and three touchdowns.

Wilbon Says "CUT MCNABB", McNabb Says He doesnt agree to Benching (Blog, Video)

Image
Michael Wilbon won't be writing his opinions on Donovan McNabb's benching for The Washington Post, so I'll just have to take them from this video he did with NBC Washington. "Stay here for what?" he said, when asked about McNabb's future. "I mean, I hope they cut him. I hope they cut him, so he can go somewhere else where there's an atmosphere that's not Days of Our Lives. Donovaon's my boy. Do I want to see him in that? No. I don't. And I was excited when he came. I thought it might be different. But it's not different." Redskins quarterback  Donovan McNabb  issued a terse statement through his publicist today after coach Mike Shanahan announced he had benched McNabb. “I respect Mike’s decision as a head coach, but I strongly disagree with it,” McNabb said. McNabb hasn’t given any in-depth interviews, but he did talk to his buddy Mike Wilbon, who said on ESPN’s  Pardon the Interruption  that McNabb described himself as “very d...
