The  survey showing  many American corporations hiring overseas even as unemployment stays at post-Depression highs at home confirms what I've been hearing from readers for some time. They've written that their companies are indeed hiring, but not here. The reasons for the dissonance are complex, but the excuse that overseas markets are recovering while the United States languishes won't provide much comfort. Once upon a time, major companies here were export giants with factories in America. Thus, stronger demand overseas would have meant jobs for Americans. This helped sustain a consensus that trade was a good thing for America. Since the 1980s, more American corporations have moved operations offshore. This has given them closer access to emerging markets and the benefits of much cheaper labor. NEW YORK -- Brett Favre has been fined $50,000 but not suspended for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after the league's investigation into allegations he sent inappropriate messages and lewd photos to a former New York Jets game hostess. The $50,000 punishment was for failing to cooperate in the investigation, it was announced Wednesday. Brett Favre Voicemails:  Favre allegedly sent the messages and photos to Jenn Sterger two years ago when they were both with the Jets. The allegations against the 41-year-old Minnesota Vikings quarterback surfaced in October on the website Deadspin. It posted a video Oct. 7 that included text messages and voicemails allegedly left by the quarterback for Sterger, including one in which he invites her to his hotel. The video ends with several below-the belt photos - said to be of Favre - which were allegedly sent to Sterger. LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Los Angeles County prosecutors say defense attorneys for Michael Jackson's doctor will claim the singer killed himself. Dr. Conrad Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in pop singer Michael Jackson's June 2009 death. The announcement from prosecutor David Walgren came during a Wednesday hearing in downtown Los Angeles during which the two sides clashed over who should test residue from two syringes found in Jackson's bedroom. Liquid in one of the syringes has already dried up and was now "salt," according to attorneys. Defense attorneys want tests expedited on the syringes and an IV bag found in the singer's mansion after his death, saying they are rapidly deteriorating. Attorney Michael Flanagan said a huge amount of the anesthetic propofol was found in Jackson's body but his client has said he gave him only 25 milligrams on the drug. MTV  -- first accused of glamorizing teen pregnancy with " 16 and Pregnant " -- is now facing charges it's promoting abortion with a controversial new show airing tonight. On the show, Markai Durham, who was first seen last month on "16 and Pregnant," discovers she is expecting again and must decide whether to have the baby. Her decision to terminate the pregnancy is the centerpiece of "No Easy Decision" and has pro-lifers up in arms. The show is so unusual, MTV scheduled it to air at 11:30 p.m. -- well past the bedtimes of the network's youngest fans.
