Energy drinks send thousands to ER, according to US report (BLOG)

Image
A new report from the US government released on Tuesday warns that energy drinks are sending an alarming number of people toemergency rooms. In 2009, US emergency rooms treated almost 10 times more cases of reactions to beverages such as Monster, Red Bull, and Rockstar than they did in 2005, according to a report from the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). More than 13,000 people visited hospital emergency rooms in 2009 due to highly caffeinated beverages, and nearly half the emergencies resulted from mixing energy drinks with alcohol or other drugs. The report notes that the vast majority (77 percent) of these visits were made by people ages 18 to 39 and that males made up 64 percent of all the visits. "A lot of attention has been paid to energy drinks that have alcohol in them and everybody understands that the effect of that can be pretty serious," said lead author Albert Woodward, project director of SAMHSA's Drug Abuse Warni...

Hacker group Anonymous targets UC-Davis pepper-spray cop (BLOG)

Image
The rogue hacker group known as Anonymous posted a YouTube video disclosing the cellphone number, email and home address of Lt. John Pike, the University of California Davis police officer who sparked worldwide outrage when he pepper-sprayed a group of student protesters over the weekend. "Dear Officer John Pike," a computer-generated voice in the video said. "Your information is now public domain." The video, which was posted on Tuesday, has since been removed because it is "a violation of YouTube's policy prohibiting hate speech ." Anonymous has threatened or claimed credit for attacks on numerous media organizations, including Fox News --but this appears to be the first time the hacking group has targeted an individual. "We have no problem targeting police and releasing their information even if it puts them at risk," the group said, "because we want them to experience just a taste of the brutality and misery they serve us on...

Talking Turkey: How Much Do Americans Eat on Thanksgiving? (BLOG)

Image
Americans gobble up 46 million turkeys at Thanksgiving. That works out to almost 3 pounds of poultry per person who partakes in the feast, according to statistics from the National Turkey Federation. At an average weight of 16 pounds apiece, last year's Thanksgiving turkeys weighed 736 million pounds altogether. And at an average cost of $1.19 per pound, Americans spent $875 million buying those birds for the big day. All that may sound like a lot, but as it turns out, we're a turkey-loving nation the rest of the year, too. More than 226 million turkeys were consumed in the United States in 2010; the 46 millionThanksgiving birds represent just one-fifth of that total. We also ate 22 million at Christmas and 19 million at Easter. The rest, 139 million turkeys, were devoured in club sandwiches and the like. Turkey consumption has nearly doubled over the past 25 years, according to the National Turkey Federation. Per-person turkey consumption is currently 16.4 pounds per yea...

Video: Octopus crawls out of water and walks on dry land (BLOG,VIDEO)

Image
Check out this video of an octopus literally crawling out of the water and dragging itself across dry land in pursuit of a meal. A family with a camera was lucky enough to be on the scene and captured the whole thing on video: If you're curious to learn more about the sea creature's possible motivation, there has been some great research on the understanding of octopus intelligence recently, including this surprisingly moving article in Orion magazine , chronicling a researchers bond with a giant Pacific octopus named Athena. As it turns out, walking on land in the octopus kingdom is not as unique as you might think: Some would let themselves be captured, only to use the net as a trampoline. They'd leap off the mesh and onto the floor—and then run for it. Yes, run. "You'd chase them under the tank, back and forth, like you were chasing a cat," [Middlebury College researcher Alexa] Warburton said. "It's so weird!" Octopuses in cap...

New find sheds light on ancient site in Jerusalem (BLOG)

Image
JERUSALEM (AP) — Newly found coins underneath Jerusalem'sWestern Wall could change the accepted belief about the construction of one of the world's most sacred sites two millennia ago, Israeli archaeologists said Wednesday. The man usually credited with building the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary is Herod, a Jewish ruler who died in 4 B.C. Herod's monumental compound replaced and expanded a much older Jewish temple complex on the same site. But archaeologists with the Israel Antiquities Authority now say diggers have found coins underneath the massive foundation stones of the compound's Western Wall that were stamped by a Roman proconsul 20 years after Herod's death. That indicates that Herod did not build the wall — part of which is venerated as Judaism's holiest prayer site — and that construction was not close to being complete when he died. "The find changes the way we see the construction, and sho...

(Reuters) - Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history on Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and topguitar players. "Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage," said Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello in the magazine, citing Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" as key tracks. Hendrix is joined by the likes of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend among the top 10, in a list laden with rock 'n' roll icons spanning decades. The panel of experts recruited to vote for their favorite guitar players included musicians such as Lenny Kravitz, Eddie Van Halen(who was voted No. 8), Brian May and Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys, along with a selection of Rolling Stone's senior writers and editors.
